Playa de la Tejita

La Tejita

The popular holiday destination of Tenerife in the Canary Islands has many beaches and one of the best of these is known as Playa de la Tejita. This long sandy beach is close by the resort of El Médano on the south coast of the island and also quite near to the Tenerife South Airport.

Playa de la Tejita, or Playa Tejita, as it is often called, is over 1 km in length and 100 m in breadth making it one of the largest beaches in Tenerife. It has been awarded the Blue Flag of excellence and is ideal for children to play on the sands, though waves and strong currents in the sea can make it unsuitable for bathing.

This beach and the other El Médano beaches can be very windy, and whilst this can be a disadvantage, it has made the resort very popular with wind-surfers, who often take part in competitions there.

There are sunshades and sun-loungers available at both ends of La Tejita beach, and the south-eastern section has become very popular with naturists. At the western side of the beach there is a beachside bar where you can grab a bite to eat and have something to drink.

At the one end of Playa Tejita and overlooking it, is the landmark Montaña Roja (“Red Mountain”), a volcanic cone mountain that can be seen easily from inland. This mountain is fairly easy to climb and offers some wonderful views along the coast. Naturalists will also find many species of interesting flora and fauna here and in the sand dunes at its base.

It is easy to find somewhere to park you car if visiting Playa Tejita, and El Médano is within easy reach if you want to do some shopping or go for a meal at any of its many restaurants.

If you are visiting Tenerife you can find self-catering apartment holiday accommodation in the area or you could book a hotel in Tenerife South, in nearby El Médano, which is aptly named Hotel Médano. It looks out over the Atlantic Ocean and you can get some great views of the Red Mountain just along the coast.
